A terrified Mum and Gran watched on in horror as a huge Great Dane savaged a baby girl. Shockingly, the Gran’s rescue dog Harvey approached baby Olivia and lunged for her - ripping off her right ear. The attack left little Olivia with life-long scars as she underwent hours of surgery to re-attach the right tip of her ear. Since the attack, the three-foot tall pooch has been put down. Dog lover Michelle said: “I was standing in the kitchen, Olivia and Brittany were on the floor playing and Brittany was making her giggle. “Then I just heard Brittany scream ‘no’ - I turned round and saw him lunge at Olivia. “If he hadn’t and he hadn’t and he had got hold of her head - I would have had to decide who to save, my pregnant daughter or my granddaughter. “All that was going through my mind was, she is not dying in my kitchen. “There was so much blood, I thought she was going to bleed out.” Brittany has three children with 28-year-old husband Taylor, including Mason, 3 and Madison, two months. Following the attack, the family rushed Olivia to hospital where she was kept for two days. During her time there, she had to undergo one hour of surgery to re-attach the tip of her right ear and a two hour skin graft on the top of her head. As a result, the tot left the tot with permanent scars on her face. Family dog Harvey is believed to have been abused by his previous owners and was taken into quarantine for 10 days by animal control before being put down. Brittany said: “We were supposed to be going home but my Mason wanted to see his grandmother. “It started off normal. I usually tell the dogs to go away if they approach us but he was calm. “For some reason I let him come over and out of nowhere he bit her head, he was trying to get her whole head in his mouth.” Brittany remains hopeful Olivia won’t remember what happened but the youngster is now wary and cautious around other dogs and sometimes wakes up grabbing her ear. She said: “I’ve blocked it out so I only remember bits. “I remember my mum and brother trying to pull him away and I put my arm in his mouth. “All I could think was please keep crying because I knew if she was crying then she was alive. “There was blood everywhere. I was pregnant but I wasn’t about me. I just wanted to save my daughter.” Even though she came close to losing her daughter, Michelle felt sorry for the pooch but eventually made the tough decision to put him down. Michelle said: “It was a complete shock because he was a sweet dog, you could just tell he’d been abused. “He didn’t know how to be a dog, he didn’t know how to run and didn’t like going on the grass. “He didn’t have a good life, but he was sweet and he wanted attention. “Shame on the people who owned him before, I just hope in the two months he spent with us it showed him a different life. “You don’t want to see an animal put down but once they have done something like this there’s no goingfree fonts Baby has ear ripped off by 10 stone Great Dane in savage dog attack | |
