The story of the real-life Rambo is even more dramatic than Sylvester Stallone's onscreen muscleman. Former special forces sniper Joseph Hunter – nicknamed after Stallone's bloodthirsty solider – was sentenced to life in prison in March for his work as a bounty hunter for international crime and drug cartel bosses. After being caught several years earlier in an international sting, Kentucky born Hunter, 53, admitted his cold-blooded occupation as an underworld assassin. But it was for arranging for the murder of a female estate agent in the Philippines in 2012 on behalf of a international crime boss, that he was locked up for good this year. Catherine Lee was shot twice in the face before being dumped on a rubbish tip. It was crime that eventually led him to be given a life sentence. Hunter's life reads like plot lines from any of the Rambo franchise, including the latest Rambo movie Last Blood where a battle scarred Stallone crosses into Mexico to fetch a kidnapped child and become enmeshed with a ruthless cartel in the process. The only difference is Hunter is a cold and ruthless killer, seemingly devoid of any humanity. Sentencing him in New York this year, Judge Ronnie Abrams said Hunter had "planned and committed truly horrific crimes" adding that he proudly told new recruits the job would be like acting in a 'Bond Movie'. In recruitment videos the judge said Hunter spoke about kidnapping, torture and assassination as though "it was a business, plain and simple" and she was "struck by how matter-of-fact it was." Except, "this wasn't a movie. Real lives were taken," she told the court before sentencing hunter to life imprisonment. At the time Hunter was already serving a 20-year sentence for other, equally chilling crimes. When he left the army in 2004 he began kidnapping and killing people to order on behalf of an international criminals. It's not known how many scalps he may have claimed. It all started when he began work private security firms in Iraq, including a spell with a company protecting American embassy worker. It was here that he found his niche as a hired killer and became involved in gun running. After a decade of living in the shadows the hired killer was arrested in Thailand in 2013 after intelligence found he was managing a team of contract hit men. At the time he was charged with conspiracy to murder a federal drug agent and a drug-world informant in exchange for an $800,000 bounty. The American Drug Enforcement Administration said the guns for hire believed they were working for leaders of a Colombian drug cartel and had arranged for hi-tech latex masks to be made to make them look a different race. Just like something out of Rambo they planned to use sub-machine guns to kill their targets before make an escape out of Liberia in a private jet. In reality the gig was a sting led by US government agents. It's believed the intelligence service was tipped off about Hunter's operation was by former criminal boss and Soutfree fonts Tragic end of real-life Rambo emerges as Last Blood movie hits screens | |
